Anything by RA Lafferty. The only novel of his I've read is Past Master, which has a shocking first paragraph, but his short stories would work as well (I can give suggestions if you want).

Off the top of my head, some of my favorites are "Nine Hundred Grandmothers," "The Six Fingers of Time," "Snuffles," "Adam Had Three Brothers," and "Boomer Flats." The first one I ever read was "Aloys" and it hooked me. I also quite like "And Walk Now Gently Through the Fire," "Ishmael into the Barrens," and the novella "How Many Miles to Babylon?"
